Adjusting to the Transition with Care

We’re All Adjusting to a BIG Transition.

Last summer, we surreptitiously stepped out into the world, just to retreat again with the following waves of Covid in the Fall and Winter.

With the vaccine rollout, we’re anticipating a much more hopeful reopening in the summer of 2021. Some of us are already creeping back into the dizzying spin of commuting to work and filling our social calendars. Still, it’s important to be gentle with ourselves and focus on self-care as we emerge from a very challenging year.

An Officially Enforced Break From The World

Some of us received a much-needed break, some of us experienced the stress of illness or financial insecurity. Many of us were moved to re-assess how we live our lives. How much activity is enough? How hard do we need to push ourselves?

This is especially important when considering the collective trauma that we all experienced over the past year. In December and January, Los Angeles was the epicenter of the pandemic. We are only very recently breathing a sigh of relief as we see vaccination rates rise and Covid cases falling.

Finally, our nervous systems can shift away from “high alert” to a genuine threat, back into “rest and restore,” but it takes time for our bodies and minds to come back into balance.

Take Care As You Reintegrate Into The World

Be gentle with yourself as you transition into this next phase, which is still tinged with some uncertainty about herd immunity and the possibility of waves re-emerging. Keep some of the slowness that you may have been able to practice during the pandemic, which allows us to listen to that inner guidance telling us, “this is enough.”

After years of being over-worked and over-extended, some of us may have finally slowed down enough to be able to listen to that quiet voice, which often gets drowned out by a culture that values overwork and busyness at the expense of our physical and mental well-being. Now that things are reopening let’s not lose that connection.

Consider Scheduling Downtime

Maybe that means scheduling more time for rest and wellness. Maybe that means choosing quality over quantity in our social schedules. More now than ever, it’s important to tune into what your body and mind need during this transition and to make room for that in your life.

In the meantime, have you considered…
