GLP-1s, Exercise & Your Health

No doubt you’ve heard of the drug Ozempic. It’s the brand name for one of several medications known as GLP-1s. Originally developed to manage type-2 diabetes, GLP-1’s have proven extraordinarily effective for weight loss.

This development isn’t surprising, given that weight loss is a central focus of treating type 2 diabetes. But GLP-1s are so good at melting off the pounds, prescriptions for weight loss have exploded. And researchers are exploring a host of other potential uses for this medication beyond its intended use.

But as the number of Ozempic users grows, many people are asking the same question: Is relying on a drug that only addresses diet the path to a healthy lifestyle? Boba, like many fitness professionals, doesn’t think so. And while Boba and others in the fitness industry endorse the benefits of GLP-1s, they’re also encouraging users to make exercise an equal part of their wellness routine. For good reasons.

Balancing GLP-1s With The Need For Physical Activity

The pharmaceutical industry has promised “better living through chemistry” since the middle of the 20th Century. And drug therapy has achieved major breakthroughs in treating numerous ailments. But nearly every prescription drug currently on the market carries some degree of side effects.

In the case of GLP-1s, users often report a decrease in appetite to the point of finding food unappealing and even feeling nauseous at the mere thought of eating. And while users are thinner, they also describe feeling weaker and less energetic. Not unexpected, considering eating less means your body is taking in less fuel.

And a commonly overlooked fact about weight loss is that when you eat less, you lose not only fat but also muscle. That’s why you’re encouraged to lift weights when taking a GLP-1. But if you’re feeling weak and depleted, weight training can seem overwhelming and out of reach.

Resistance Exercise: An Alternative to Traditional Weight Training

Weight training isn’t required to build strength or get fit. In fact, you can improve your fitness and get stronger just by moving your body. Simple exercise routines you can do lying on your back are an excellent first step toward rebuilding your strength.

This type of exercise is known as resistance training. Your own body weight, along with resistance bands and stability balls, are all the tools you need. Pilates is also a popular form of resistance training.

Unlike weights, resistance movements are controlled – you’re using the mass of your body to activate your muscles. This approach doesn’t burn as much energy, is more controlled than weightlifting, and for most, it feels safer.

Consistency is the Key to Physical Fitness

If you’re feeling out of shape, especially if weakened by GLP-1s, the idea of exercising can feel daunting. But it doesn’t have to be an exhausting or overwhelming experience.

Successful fitness programs are progressive. You start slowly with simple routines and work at your own pace. If you’re feeling weak and depleted from not eating much, this is your ideal starting point.

Over time, you’ll build strength and confidence, and your routine will become progressively more challenging. One step at a time, one foot after the other, you will rebuild your body.

The key is to maintain a consistent routine. It’s not about the degree of difficulty or how hard you push. It’s about showing up regularly and progressively building your strength and fitness.
