The toughest part of starting an exercise program?
Taking that all-important First Step. Because once you get over the hurdle of actually taking action – You have momentum on your side.
But that said, you’re not out of the woods yet…
Because the next step is equally as difficult. And that’s actually sticking with your program.
A boatload of statistics shows that about 50% of people quit a new exercise program within the first six months. And only about 10% ultimately achieve their fitness goals.
That means on average, only 1 out of every 10 people stick with their exercise program.
Spring is in full bloom, and summer is on the way. Imagine one of the backyard barbeques you’re likely to attend in the next couple of months. Among the 10 friends and acquaintances on hand, only one will make good on their goal to get in shape this summer.
That paints a pretty glum picture, huh?
But the real question here is: WHY?
It comes down to three key factors. Planning. Procrastination. And accountability.
Let me explain how this relates to you.

Planning
I bet you’re savvy enough to realize that just deciding to hit the gym, go for a jog, or take a morning walk one day is meaningless, and you need a plan to actually get in shape.
But here’s the thing. Over and over, statistics show most people aren’t realistic when it comes to planning their exercise program. They don’t realize how many potential roadblocks can derail their plans…
Travel for work or with family; a new work project; a personal, family, or work crisis…
These can all throw a monkey wrench into your best laid plans. And once you miss a few days in your exercise program, you lose momentum. And then it’s way too easy to abandon your program altogether.

Procrastination
While planning an exercise program is a valuable roadmap for achieving your fitness goals, it’s only as good as your commitment to following through.
There’s a popular saying in the tropics: “Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow.”
And sure, we all feel lazy at times. Everyone needs a moment to rest and recover. And investing in self-care is important.
The problem is, once you put exercising off until tomorrow, it’s just as easy to put it off until the day after that. And the next thing you know, you’ve forgotten all about your exercise program.

Accountability
So far, we’ve focused on why exercise programs fail. Now, let’s look at how they can succeed.
We’ve acknowledged above that even the best-laid plans face challenges. And that we all, for one reason or another, fall victim to procrastination.
When faced with these commonplace struggles, how do you stick with an exercise program?
In a word: Accountability.
And that means: Taking ownership of actions, decisions, and outcomes, rather than just tasks.
But holding yourself accountable can be very difficult. If not, we’d see far more people achieve their goals.
The solution?
